Statue of Franz Kafka by Jaroslav Róna

The Franz Kafka Monument by sculptor Jaroslav Róna, unveiled in 2003, is a bronze sculpture 3.75 meters high and weighing 800 kilograms. The group consists of two figures – the lower massive figure represents only a headless and handless empty men's suit, which carries a smaller figure of Franz Kafka on its shoulders. The inspiration for this unusual solution was Kafka's early novella Description of a Struggle, in which the main character finds himself on the shoulders of his companion. The work thus expresses the motif of inner division and alienation, characteristic of Kafka's work, and at the same time symbolically recalls the complex spiritual and personal world of one of the most important writers of the 20th century.
